Really great book to have before starting basic training. This book describes every thing you need to know in the Navy including attire, the history behind the Navy, and more! This book is practically brand new and only has a couple little dings on the edges from ware. All the pages are in excellent condition with no highlighter marks, tares, water stains, etc.

One of the handiest sea faring books ever written! There is a wealth of information about seamanship contained in this fairly compact guide. I was anxious to replace the one issued to me by the US Navy in boot camp, which my mom gave to the Salvation Army along with my many other prized possessions from childhood, teen years and post Navy days. All so she could have a clean attic! Now if I can just get back my comic books, baseball cards, visible man (no, I did not grow up to be a doctor but made a pretty fine FMF Corpsman), oh and my Holly 4 barrel carb would be nice to have. Sorry mom, but I am still not laughing.

Similar to the Boy Scouts Manual...(but much better) this is a manual for life. You'll want to keep it under your pillow.😀 Seriously the best reference guide one can find on seamanship ever written. I would recommend it strongly for high school students that are considering a career at sea. I'm getting a PhD after my Naval Service and STILL find her chapters relevant and informative. Nothing better for life's lessons!

This was the edition that I was issued when I joined the Navy in 1960. During my 12 years of service, I lost it and bought a later version. The later version had a different layout, such as very wide page margins, that I didn't like.I've been out of the Navy for a very long time now, but I still feel the thrill that I had as a young recruit when I opened the pages of this book and learned something new about Navy life. As an added bonus, the book I received had the name and service number of a Navy buddy hand printed on the inside cover. If you're in the Navy now, you'll want the latest version. But, if like me, you're living on memories ---- this is a good one.

I bought this to give to a 10-year old. You don't have to be in the Navy to appreciate the stuff you'll learn from this book. My uncle gave me one when I was ten and I read it over and over. Mine is an edition printed back in the 1950s. This one is updated and has a ton of information that boys like.

This was my Bible after my brothers returned from WWII. Later on the Boy Scout, "Handbook for Boys" became my Bible. Eventually the Holy Bible became my Bible. I am writing a WWII novel and this is my number one research choice for information about naval uniforms, pay, training and rules and regulations. It is an encyclopedia of everything from Morse code and semaphore signals to first aid and artillery projectile coding. The original owner, M.J. Kizer, marked it well as he didn't want to lose it. I'd like to know the places this book traveled after training.

What's not to like. I purchased this as a present for my Grandson upon his acceptance at Naval Training School. I guess he liked it.He told me that the Navy Recruiter told him to just leave it at home because the Navy would provide one to him. What the Recruiterdid not know was that 'Grandma' had written a little bit of wisdom and loving wishes just inside the book she gave to him. He did leaveit at home and I doubt that he even opened it . Thank you, Mr. Recruiter !

I received my first Bluejacket's Manual in November, 1943. It was the 11th Edition. The occasion was my entry into boot camp at the very large recruit training center in San Diego. The size of the Navy during WWII was nothing short of awesome. In 1945 there were over 3.4 million wearing Navy blue! The BJM served me well during my World War II tour as a Pharmacist's Mate. After four years, my enlistment expired in October, 1947. Discharged as a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd class, E-5 in today's jargon. I then spent 5 years in the Naval Reserve. My rating was changed in 1948 to Hospital Corpsman Second Class, HM2.As Pharmacist's Mates we had always been referred to as "hospital corpsmen" and we were graduates of "Hospital Corps School" so nothing really changed. I still have my certificate of graduation from "Corps School" in San Diego, dated March, 1944. I had just turned 19 years old.About 10 years ago I bought a 22nd edition of the BJM at the local Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base, here in Fort Worth, Texas.I'll always love the U.S. Navy and will enjoy looking through the 24th edition as I celebrate my 85th birthday March 15th.Fair winds and following seas to all my shipmates; past, present, and future.God Bless all who serve in our nation's armed forces.Radford B. Allen, Jr.+(PhM2c USN)

In 1940 the United States Navy was an antiquated collection of well-built ships and slow but durable aircraft. These two features were to save countless lives in battle with an at-the-time superior foe ie; the Imperial Japanese Navy. Never short on guts, the average 1940 Sailor was not prepared for W.W.II but how quickly things change. Five short years later we were the most powerful fleet EVER. While the 1940 edition of the "BJM" differs greatly from the one I was issued in 1994, the core values of "Honor, Committment & Courage" have never changed. Pride isn't specifically listed but it's there nonetheless. The "BJM" is a fascinating book for all the practical sailing knowledge it carries. It should be on every yacht owner's bookshelf. Tying knots, heaving lines, rules of the road (sea), etc. Plus it's just plain interesting to read.
