In the year AD 3000, Earth is a barren wasteland, plundered of its natural resources by the millennium-long regime of taloned, gas-breathing, nine-foot alien conquerors from the planet Psychlo. Fewer than 35,000 humans survive in a handful of communities scattered across the face of a postapocalyptic Earth.Â

From a desolate village in the Rocky Mountains near what once was Denver, Colorado, a courageous young man named Jonnie Goodboy Tyler embarks on a hero's journey to challenge the fearful myths of his people.Â

Enslaved by the sadistic Terl, the Psychlo security chief of Earth, Jonnie and a small band of survivors pit their quest for freedom against Terl's ruthless ambition for personal wealth and power in a rebellion that erupts across the continents of Earth and the cosmic sprawl of the Psychlo empire, with the fate of the world, of mankind, and of the galaxies beyond in the balance.Â

I received a note from Galaxy Press asking if I would be interested in reviewing a special "21st Century" edition of this science fiction classic in return for an honest review. I indicated that I had read the book many moons ago and enjoyed it and they said they did not mind so back into it I went. They have added new cover art by Frazetta, added handwritten notes by Hubbard as he researched the book and included the last interview done by Hubbard.Well, the book is as good I as I remembered (pity about the movie), full of swashbuckling action and tremendous descriptive power as the story of an earth that has been under the control of aliens for the last thousand years as they mine our resources. They actually found earth after intercepting a space probe we sent out describing us, our location and including a gold plaque, said metal being as rare and desirable in other regions of the universe. Most sci-fi fans consider this a real classic and for good reason. One item in the interview caught my eye, the reference to the quote by Hubbard that if you want to make money, write a good book; if you really want to make a lot of money, start a religion! This remark has always caused me to look upon the "religion" of Scientology based on his principles with a good deal of skepticism. He claims not to have said that, believing it was actually George Orwell. Well, to the web I went and found about 40 instances of his having said it.So, that issue aside, if you wade into this 1,000 page tome be prepared to lose some sleep, get some meals late, etc. since it grabs the reader as much as it did 30 years ago. The side items are also a kick - lyrics for the Space Jazz album - first soundtrack for a book (?) and an ad for the unabridged audio book version with 65 actors performing 198 characters and running 47 1/2 hours on 44 CDs!Never read it? This is a good version to get into. Read it before? Probably time for another look.

I am a lover of all that is Sci-Fi. Regardless of L. Ron. Hubbard's religious, ahem, connections, I still enjoyed the science fiction books that he wrote. I read Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000, quite a few years ago while working as a cashier in the Automotive Department of our local K-Mart. It was sometimes not very busy at work, so when I wasn't fronting shelves or sweeping the floor, I'd be sitting behind the counter reading this book. And, it really transported me away from the smell of car batteries, lubricants and tires.I won't say what's already been said here. Others have probably already posted a synopsis of the plot and story-line, the characters, the settings, etc. I'll just say it's a good romp in a far-flung future in which Earth has been conquered by an evil race of aliens and the hero of the book is on a quest to overthrow the evil overlords, although that isn't what he initially sets out to do. It's amazing what adventures the hero winds up in just because he left his village to find answers to questions. It's a long book which, for me, is a plus because I never want a good book to end. And, to me, this is a good book. There's love, there's adventure, there's real science-fiction like from the Golden Age of Sci-Fi. It's just a fun book, and it's one of my favorites. All I can say is, just read it and give it a chance. It takes a little bit to build up speed. But, once it does, I think you'll see that this not-so-little gem has been unfairly overlooked/over-analyzed/over-thought. Just relax and enjoy reading it for the fun of it! Also, the movie that is based on this book is terrible! Please, by Xenu, do not watch the movie before reading the book. Actually, don't watch the movie even after reading the book!

I chose to read this when I remembered friends being very excited about the movie because the book was “amazing”. Obviously the movie was garbage and they were all upset when they saw it, but the book was still highly recommended. It should not have been. I gave it 2 stars for a simple reason…Amazon requires at least 1 star which is basically none and I give it 1 star for having a good (but poorly executed) plot. When reading this, any normal person would assume it was written by a child. The punctuation is so bad that it is frequently difficult to tell if you are reading dialogue or thoughts, the dialogue goes back and forth between childish and the author trying to sound intelligent and the dialogue is constantly repetitive. All of the characters repeat everything three times. It is like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory knocking on a door. Here is an example…”Leverage, leverage, leverage-I must get leverage, leverage, leverage-What can I do without leverage-OH MY”. This book would have been less than half the length if they would edit out the repetitive dialogue/thoughts. Also, all conversations were just repeated multiple times with occasional slight changes…even between different characters.I’m clearly not a writer, but at least I know it. The fact this book was even published is an insult to many real authors who fought and struggled to get published. I want to go back and watch the movie again because, while it may be terrible, you can only do so much when your source material is this bad. It might be one of the most accurate film adaptations ever made.

Ron Hubbard had a reputation as a pathological liar, and this book feels like the grandest of tall tales. A young man goes from tribal savage to savior of the multiverse. The scope just keeps getting bigger at each stage of the story, and the plot moves forward as much by sheer luck as by courage, skill and purity of character. The forward says that Hubbard wrote it for his own amusement. The book is definitely fun, and definitely not gritty. It's like Star Wars with a bit of tongue-in-cheek. To spoil it just a little, when things are going from bad to worse, you know that something absurd is about to happen which will turn it all around. However, it's just believable enough for you to enjoy the turnabout and keep reading.
